Something about flipping the calendar to a new year gets everyone excited about new beginnings and leaves them open to making changes in their life. The only problem, for most, is that the feeling is fleeting, and by the end of January no longer serves as motivation.
One answer for this is to pick a resolution that will build upon itself. Starting small and focusing on the process rather than setting a big goal lets the resolution build into something you look forward to doing.
Here are 7 examples (in countdown order) of resolutions you can make that will stick because they are simple and make you feel good:
7. Put your phone in the glove compartment.
It can wait. Put the phone out of reach so you are not tempted. Force yourself to wait (or use it hands free).
6. Sit down at a table to eat your meals.
Whether it is quality time with family/friends, or just a meal alone, use this time to do it right. Avoid the urge to eat in front of the television.
5. Read an additional 7 pages a day.
An additional 7 pages a day will amount to over 2500 pages for the year. Take John Wooden’s advice and, ‘Drink deeply from good books.”
4. Write a letter a week.
Set aside your e-mails and text messages once a week and write an old fashioned letter to reconnect with a loved one, show appreciation, or just say thank you. You will be amazed at the weight a written letter carries.
3. Pick one word to shape your year.
We have no affiliation with Jon Gordon, just a great respect and admiration for his work. His book, “One Word That Will Change Your Life” has been an influential part of Better Basketball this past year.
2. Resist the urge to check e-mail, social media, etc first thing in the morning.
Don’t let what comes in from others set the tone for your day. Have breakfast, shower, read, enjoy quiet time, or whatever else gets you ready for your day. Doing these things first allows you to get in the mindset you desire. Take control of your mood by being in control of your day.
1. Get moving! Set a simple fitness plan.
The key to any new fitness plan is to get moving. Even small gains will get you feeling good and help you look forward to working out. the key is to take those first steps (warning: shameless plug to follow). We have designed coachFIT to be that type of program. 15 minutes, 3 days a week to get you moving.
